Commonly Used SEO Terms (Part 2)

I'm back with another post regarding the most commonly used terms in SEO. If you missed part 1, you view it by clicking this link. Anyway, here are 8 terms you might find useful. There is no need for you to skip a website because it's full of jargons. Enhance your vocabulary little by little. In no time, these SEO terms won't seem too foreign anymore.

  • Entity. It's difficult to explain entity because an entity can be anything whether it is a living or non-living thing. An apple can be considered one single entity. You can be an entity. Basically, an entity is a placeholder. A person, an object, a plant, a place, and a name can be an entity. Any can be an entity.
  • Pogo-sticking. Pogo-sticking happens when a user clicks a website and then, he hits the back button immediately. He does not linger or explore further the website.
  • SEO, PPC, and SEM. These 3 terms are interrelated. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) has to do with natural and organic search results while PPC (Pay per Click) is the opposite. It deals with the paid search results. SEM (Search Engine Marketing) refers to both SEO and PPC, but it leans toward PPC more.
  • UX. UX means User Experience. It refers to a website's usability and functionality. It pertains to the overall atmosphere and vibe of a website as experienced by the user.
  • Alt tag. Alt tag (or alternative text) is an HTML attribute when you use the IMG tag. The IMG tag names the image you wish to display. Beside it, you can add an alt tag to display an alternative text if in any case the preferred image won't load.
  • For example: <img src="music1.jpg" alt="a woman listening to music"/> In this line of HTML code, you are calling upon an image called "music1.jpg". If the image won't load, there's a line of text explaining what the image is about. This is really useful especially to the visually impaired users. They get a sense of what the image is about without actually seeing it. Ultimately, the alt tag improves a website's accessibility.
  • Anchor Text. A link contains 2 things: a URL and an anchor text. Of course, you need to indicate the specific web address of link. It should be redirected into another page once the link is clicked. The anchor text should be able to explain that this phrase is a link.
  • I will give you a concrete example. If you want to read part 1 of this discussion, you can do so by clicking here. The phrase clicking here is the anchor text that holds the link COMMONLY USED SEO TERMS.
